Follow Roy’s tail-wagging guide to a dog-friendly Malta in July
Words by Roy (with a little help from Ruth Zammit DeBono – paws don’t type!)

Woof! If you’re a jet-setting pup like me, welcome to sunny Malta where the sea shimmers, the limestone sparkles and the smells are simply heavenly. I may have a curly coat and a passport as packed as a trolley bag, but this Mediterranean gem never fails to make me wag my tail in joy.

Let me tell you, summer here is hot and not just for humans. Dogs like us have to stay cool and comfortable too. So here’s my personal guide to getting the most out of dog-friendly travel in Malta this season.

Start early: Sunrise strolls at Għadira Bay

My mama and I rise at dawn for our favourite walk along Għadira Bay. It’s quiet before the crowds arrive, and the sand is still cool under my paws. We stroll along the water, take a few snaps, and sit to watch the waves sparkle – absolute heaven. Pro tip: bring water, treats, and a good lead – and don’t forget your human’s camera.

Dog-friendly parks with a view: Valletta’s Upper Barrakka Gardens

Next up on my sniff-map is Valletta. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are a green oasis with panoramic harbour views. I like to sit under the trees, catch the breeze in my fur, and people-watch (bonus points if someone gives me a pat on the head). It’s a great shady stop for pups and humans alike.

Cool cobblestones and medieval charm in Mdina

When I’m in the mood for a fairy-tale setting, I head to Mdina – the Silent City. The quiet, narrow alleys and high stone walls keep things cool even on hot days. I walk like a noble knight on patrol… occasionally pausing to chase a stray pigeon. Don’t tell my mama.

Sundays are for Marsaxlokk markets and Maltese boats

On Sundays, we visit Marsaxlokk for the open-air market. The smells oh the smells! are next-level. Grilled fish, sweet pastries, salty air. We stroll by the traditional luzzu boats, stop under a palm tree for a nap, and always pack a collapsible water bowl. Stay hydrated, friends if the ground’s too hot for your human’s hand, it’s too hot for our paws.

Pet-friendly stays and cafés across Malta

More and more hotels in Malta welcome dogs like me with wagging tails and even a few treats. Mama always double-checks hotel pet policies before booking, but we’ve found plenty of comfy spots that go the extra mile.

When it comes to food, most outdoor cafés happily let me curl up under the table while mama enjoys her meal. I flash my best "feed me" eyes and usually get a bite. It’s all part of the job.

Summer travel tips for dogs

Travelling with pets in summer takes a little planning, but it’s worth it for the memories. Here’s what I always pack (well… mama packs, I supervise):

  • A soft-sided carrier that fits under the seat

  • My collapsible bowl and water bottle

  • Treats (obviously)

  • EU pet passport with vaccinations and microchip

  • Cooling mat for hot days

  • My favourite toy for comfort
