20th July – Feast of St Joseph, Msida

Msida’s festa is famous for il-Ġostra, a quirky and entertaining competition that sees brave participants attempt to run up a greased pole suspended over the sea, all in the name of tradition. The goal? To grab one of the fluttering flags at the far end before sliding often hilariously into the water. A must-watch for anyone in the harbour town during festa week.

27th July – Feast of St Margaret, Ta’ Sannat (Gozo)

Ta’ Sannat offers a more rural festa experience, steeped in history. A highlight here is the centuries old horse races, where horse-drawn sulkies thunder through the streets to honour St Margaret. These races now take place at sunset, blending sport, tradition and community celebration in Gozo’s stunning southern countryside.

3rd August – Feast of Our Lady of Pompeii, Marsaxlokk

Visit the iconic fishing village of Marsaxlokk for a unique moment during the procession: the statue of the Madonna is carried not by men but by the wives of local fishermen. Their heartfelt singing and strength honour a long-standing devotion to Our Lady for protection at sea. It’s a powerful sight set against the bay’s colourful luzzu boats and sparkling waters.

3rd August – Feast of St Dominic, Valletta

Held in Malta’s capital city, the Feast of St Dominic brings Valletta’s narrow streets and grand squares alive with colour, music and pageantry. The celebration includes a charming children’s procession on Friday morning, where kids carry a smaller statue to the sounds of the King’s Own Youth Band.

15th August – Santa Marija (Feast of the Assumption)

One of Malta’s biggest and most revered feasts, Santa Marija is a national holiday celebrated in various towns, with the largest festivities in Mosta and Victoria (Gozo). Expect grand firework shows, processions, and the iconic Mosta Rotunda illuminated in all its glory. The day also marks the Santa Marija Convoy, a wartime miracle still remembered with gratitude.

Looking for a quieter option? Head to Ħad-Dingli, Ħ’Attard or Qrendi for equally heartfelt celebrations without the overwhelming crowds.

24th August – Feast of St Helen, Birkirkara

This is the only major Maltese festa with a morning procession, and it’s worth waking up early for. At 8am, the golden-hued statue of St Helen is paraded through the streets, culminating in a dramatic moment when the bearers break into a full run with the statue in tow a stunning and emotional sight.

8th September – Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady (Il-Bambina), Mellieħa

Mellieħa’s festa keeps growing year after year, with a main square full of lights, music, and synchronised fireworks. You’ll also find large-scale concerts, festive stalls, and a vibrant party atmosphere that continues into the night.

The date coincides with Victory Day (Il-Vitorja), marked with a regatta in Valletta’s Grand Harbour, where teams compete in traditional Maltese boats for the prestigious Regatta Shield.
