Job Description
The Fuel Efficiency and Sustainability Manager is responsible for leading and driving sustainable practices within KM Malta Airlines under the direction of the Director of Flight Operations. This includes managing environmental impact reduction strategies, compliance with regulations, and promoting eco-friendly initiatives. The Fuel Efficiency and Sustainability Manager will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure that sustainability is integrated into all aspects of operations by setting up a steering committee to incorporate changes at Pilot level.
Responsibilities
- Sustainability Strategy Development: Develop, implement, and monitor sustainability strategies for aviation operations to reduce environmental impact (carbon emissions, energy consumption, waste management, etc.).
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to all local, national, and international sustainability regulations and standards related to aviation.
- Report Preparation: Prepare and compile reports for internal and external sustainability audits from Company resources.
- Carbon Footprint Reduction: Work on projects to reduce the carbon footprint of airline operations, including fleet optimisation, sustainable fuels, and energy-efficient ground operations.
- Partnerships and Collaboration: Collaborate with external and internal stakeholders, including Aircraft manufacturers, airports, government bodies, and environmental organizations, to promote sustainable aviation practices.
- Sustainable Innovation: Identify and lead the adoption of emerging technologies and innovations that can contribute to sustainable aviation practices (e.g., electric aircraft, green fuel technologies, etc.).
- Data Analysis and Reporting: Reviewing data from the fuel efficiency management system. Track and report on sustainability metrics, including energy use, emissions, waste, and other environmental impact factors at a deidentified individual pilot level. Ensure transparency in reporting and compliance with international sustainability frameworks. Suggesting changes in order to drive improvement in efficiency while maintaining minimum fuel consumption thresholds/requirements.
- Awareness and Education: Communicate with all employees, and partners on sustainability initiatives and the importance of reducing aviation’s environmental impact.
- Fuel Efficiency and Tankering Policy: Implement and continuously adapt a policy using dedicated resources by reviewing data from the fuel efficiency management system and suggesting changes to drive improvement. This can be achieved by aligning the FDM agreement with industry standards.
- Performance Indicators: KM Malta Airlines seeks to aim for fuel efficiency initiatives including but not limited to:
- single engine taxi-in and taxi-out,
- discretionary fuel,
- aircraft take-off/empty weight,
- flight plan optimisation,
- cost index optimisation, and
- reduce noise pollution.
Qualifications and Experience
- Two years’ experience in sustainability management, ideally within the aviation industry.
- Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and industry best practices (e.g., ICAO, IATA).
- Experience in data analysis and reporting on sustainability metrics.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
- Passion for sustainability and innovation in the aviation industry.
- Knowledge of carbon offset programs and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiatives.
- Familiarity with operational sustainability initiatives and programmes.
