Explore this section for essential details on handling your special baggage, ensuring a seamless travel experience tailored just for you.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.

Travelling with musical equipment? We've got you covered.

Musical instruments and/or equipment are accepted as checked, cabin baggage, or cabin-seat baggage based on size and shape of the item.

You can check-in instruments and/or equipment (make sure to pack them in a sturdy case!) if the instrument's weight falls within your entitled baggage allowance. If the weight is exceeded then you will have to buy excess baggage at €40 per piece per flight. Maximum weight limit for checked-in instruments/equipment is that of 32kg.

Small instruments with a maximum weight of 10KG can be carried on with you as cabin baggage depending on your fare entitlement and also space permitting. If your cabin baggage entitlement does not include a 10KG Cabin Baggage entitlement, Economy Basic and Economy Value passengers can purchase Priority which includes a 10KG hand luggage and priority boarding, guaranteeing your valued instruments is with you in the cabin.

These include:

  • Bugles
  • Clarinets
  • Flutes
  • Guitars
  • Piccolos
  • Saxophones
  • Trumpets
  • Violas
  • Violins.

For larger instruments which you would like to carry with you in the cabin, you can book a cabin-seat

Add your instrument to your flight when making your booking, through our Sales Office at Malta International Airport, or get in touch with our Call Centre on +356 2135 6000.

You will be required to present a medical certificate from your doctor to confirm that the medication/equipment is required. The certificate will need to include the details of the medication and its intended use.

You can view our Special Assistance section for more information about wheelchair and other mobility aids.

FIREARMS & AMMUNITION.

Firearms for use in sporting events carry their own special rules when being carried on board our flights.

We give security on board our flights the utmost priority. For this reason, firearms carry their own special rules when being carried on board our flights. It’s important to review the instructions below to understand the full procedure of flying with firearms on KM Malta Airlines.

PACKING YOUR FIREARMS.

When preparing to travel with firearms and/or ammunition, you should follow these instructions carefully:

  • Firearms and/or ammunition will only be accepted as checked-in baggage if they are packed in an appropriate case or packed securely inside a suitcase with your personal belongings.
  • Each firearm carried must be accompanied by the appropriate firearms certificate.
  • Loose ammunition is not permitted. Instead, it must be packed either in its original packaging or in a suitable container that prevents movement between shells or cartridges.
  • You can only pack up to 5KG of ammunition for that person’s own use.
  • Firearms will be considered as part of your checked-in baggage unless you go over the baggage allowance, depending on the ticket purchased. In that case you will need to pay the usual sports equipment fees.
  • IMPORTANT: Bags or containers containing ammunition must never bear 'explosives' labels.

BEFORE YOU FLY.

Download and print the Firearms Form and fill in the details. Email your request together with the form to [email protected].

You must email your request at least 72 hours before your flight if you intend to travel with firearms and/or ammunition. This is to ensure compliance with both national and International regulations and obligations. If you fail to do this you will be refused boarding.

Prior to your flight, you will also need to make separate arrangements for a police escort to be available at time of check-in. Expenses for the police presence will need to be covered by yourself.

BOARDING.

  • The police escort shall handle the firearm during check-in, through customs procedures and onto the aircraft.
  • You will need to declare the presence of ammunition in your checked-in baggage and security personnel who will verify that the allowed weight is not exceeded.
  • Finally, you will need to present all the required documentation and licences for your firearm or ammunition. This includes export/import licences and authorisation from local and national authorities.

MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

  • You must be at check-in at least 2 hours before your flight, to allow sufficient time to process the paperwork prior to clearing security.
  • Firearms must always be transported separately from ammunition.
  • Transporting ammunition with explosive or flammable projectiles is not permitted.

EQUIPMENT FOR INFANTS & CHILDREN.

Travelling with your infant or child has been made easier for you.

You can carry a collapsible stroller with you to the aircraft steps where it will be stowed in the hold free of charge and delivered back to you upon arrival at your destination.

If you have reserved a seat for your infant child (younger than 2 years), we recommend that you bring your own child safety seat.
