As of 3rd August 2026, national ID cards issued by EU Member States that do not contain a Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) will no longer be accepted as travel documents for movement within the EU. This measure primarily affects older paper national ID cards, notably those still in circulation in Italy and Greece.
Passengers holding a non-MRZ national ID card must travel with:
1. A valid passport; or
2. A national ID card that complies with EU security standards and contains an MRZ.
